Xenon
Xenon enhances the efficiency of high-pressure sodium lamps through several key mechanisms. As a starter gas, xenon’s low thermal conductivity and ionization potential enable easy lamp ignition at lower voltages. During operation, xenon works alongside mercury vapor to minimize heat losses that would occur if sodium vapor operated alone.
Being chemically inert, xenon protects the lamp’s electrodes from sodium corrosion while allowing the sodium to produce its characteristic golden-white light. When the lamp first starts, xenon produces a bluish-white light before the sodium warms up, ensuring a smooth transition to full operating conditions.
