Superior vena cava

The superior vena cava returns deoxygenated blood from the head, neck, and upper extremities to the right atrium. Obstruction or compression—often by malignancies or thrombosis—can precipitate superior vena cava syndrome, presenting with facial swelling, venous distention, and respiratory distress.
