Superior mesenteric vein

The superior mesenteric vein drains blood from the small intestine, cecum, ascending colon, and part of the transverse colon before merging with the splenic vein to form the portal vein. Thrombosis or obstruction here can lead to bowel edema, infarction, or portal hypertension.
