AFP

Alpha-fetoprotein

Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a protein produced primarily by the fetal liver during development. In adults, elevated AFP levels can be a marker for certain conditions, particularly in clinical diagnostics. It is most commonly associated with:

  1. Liver diseases: Elevated AFP can indicate hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) or other liver disorders like cirrhosis or hepatitis.
  2. Prenatal screening: AFP is measured during pregnancy as part of the maternal serum screening to assess the risk of neural tube defects (e.g., spina bifida) or chromosomal abnormalities like Down syndrome.
