Activities of daily living

Activities of daily living (ADLs) are the essential tasks that individuals perform on a daily basis to take care of themselves and maintain independence. These include:

  • Grooming: Personal hygiene tasks such as brushing teeth, combing hair, and bathing.
  • Dressing: Putting on and taking off clothes.
  • Toileting: Managing bathroom needs, including continence and personal hygiene afterward.
  • Eating: Feeding oneself, including meal preparation.
  • Ambulating: Moving around, including walking or using mobility aids.

These fundamental tasks are used to assess an individual’s functional status, especially in healthcare and caregiving contexts.
