Ac
Actinium
Radioactive actinium-225 has emerged as a powerful tool in cancer treatment through a method called Targeted Alpha Therapy (TAT). The treatment attaches actinium-225 to specific molecules (antibodies or peptides) that can locate and bind to cancer cells. When the actinium reaches the cancer cells, it releases alpha particles that destroy the cancer cells while largely sparing surrounding healthy tissue.
The alpha particles travel only a short distance in tissue, about the width of a few cells. Each actinium-225 atom releases four alpha particles during decay, maximizing its cancer-fighting potential.
