Area of Archaeological Importance

An Area of Archaeological Importance (AAI) is a designated area (in the UK) of significant archaeological value, typically in urban centers, that requires special protection and consideration before any ground-disturbing activities can take place. Five areas in England are currently designated as AAIs:

  • Canterbury
  • Chester
  • Exeter
  • Hereford
  • York

AAIs aim to preserve valuable archaeological contexts and evidence of past human activity, recognizing that urban centers often contain layers of historical significance.
