Ba
Barium
Barium sulfate (BaSO4) is the primary form of barium used in radiology. Its high atomic number (Z=56), allowing excellent X-ray absorption. It is insoluble in water, preventing absorption. During a typical barium study, the patient ingests (or receives an enema containing) barium suspension. The diluted barium coats the inner lining of the GI tract. X-rays or fluoroscopy capture images as the barium moves through the system.
