Cadmium

Cadmium was discovered in 1817 as an impurity in zinc carbonate. While highly toxic, cadmium has found use in rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries, which accounted for about 80% of cadmium use. However, due to environmental and health concerns, these batteries are gradually being phased out and replaced with less toxic alternatives.
