BCE

Before the Common Era

Chronological term equivalent to BC but secular in nature. BCE (Before Common Era) and CE (Common Era) are alternative year notations to the traditional BC (Before Christ) and AD (Anno Domini) system. They refer to the same periods of time but use more neutral terminology:

  1. BCE corresponds to BC, indicating years before year 1 of the Gregorian calendar
  2. CE corresponds to AD, indicating years from year 1 onward

Key points about BCE/CE:

  • Introduced in the 17th century and widely adopted in the 20th century
  • Used to promote religious neutrality and inclusivity
  • Follows the same numerical system as BC/AD (e.g., 500 BCE = 500 BC)
  • Preferred in academic and scientific contexts
  • Always written after the year number (e.g., 2025 CE)

The adoption of BCE/CE aims to acknowledge the international use of the Gregorian calendar while avoiding explicit Christian references. However, it still uses the traditional dating system centered on the estimated birth of Jesus Christ
