Hemoglobin A1c

The test measures the percentage of red blood cells that have glucose attached to them. When blood sugar levels increase, more hemoglobin becomes coated with glucose. Because red blood cells live for about three months, HbA1c reflects an average of blood sugar levels over that time period.
